Iwana Chronis new CEO of the Netherlands Film Fund

Iwana Chronis is the new CEO of the Netherlands Film Fund. Chronis will succeed Sandra den Hamer as of 1 May, who has served as interim director for the past three years. Together with managing director-board member George van Breemen, Chronis will lead the Film Fund and further shape its course and strategy. On the recommendation of the Supervisory Board, Minister of Education, Culture and Science Rianne Letschert has confirmed her appointment.

Supervisory Board chair Jorien Wuite:
“We are extremely pleased with the appointment of Iwana Chronis as CEO. Iwana knows the field inside out and was the creative driving force behind the Film Fund’s new strategy and direction. As Head of Selective Funding, she encountered many types of projects at many different stages. She knows what we have to offer as a filmmaking nation and how the Fund can contribute to help strengthen that position further. With full confidence that Iwana will lead and represent the Fund with purpose, we wish her every success and inspiration in her new role.”

“I am looking forward to getting started with great energy and confidence! The importance of a public fund for the independent film sector is significant. Especially now, at a time when the need for dialogue and connection within society is growing, meaningful stories are more necessary than ever,” says Iwana Chronis. “Remarkable films have been made in recent years that we can be incredibly proud of. We have highly talented filmmakers in our country, as well as emerging talent ready to take the next step. A strong talent pipeline for filmmakers from across the Netherlands is crucial. That forms a solid foundation on which to continue building a vibrant Dutch film culture with films that move, captivate and deepen the public’s love for Dutch cinema.”

Iwana Chronis (1977) joined the Fund in 2019 as a Feature Film consultant and has been Head of Feature Film & Documentary (previously known as ‘Head of Selective Funding’) since 2021. In this role, she was responsible for the artistic and editorial assessment process for film applications in the categories of Feature Film, Feature Animation and Feature Documentary, as well as the further development of the Fund’s artistic and editorial direction.

In the years prior, she gained extensive experience in the film sector and the broader cultural sector, both nationally and internationally. Among other roles, she led the Hubert Bals Fund at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) for many years. She also worked for the film festival Movies that Matter and the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), and was closely involved as a coordinator in the founding of the International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk (ICFR). She began her career as a programme coordinator at the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development. Iwana holds a Master’s degree in Theatre, Film and Television Studies (2002, Utrecht University) and a Master’s degree in Social Theory from the University of Melbourne (2005).
