Karatara selected for Thuthuka
In 2023, it was announced during IFFR that the documentary had been selected for a development grant under the Thuthuka programme. Thuthuka focuses on the development and production of feature films, feature-length documentaries, or animated films with South African and Dutch-related content. These films have the potential to be of such high cinematic quality that they can appeal to wide cinema and film festival audiences in both countries.
Karatara
Director: Teboho Edkins
Producers: Muyi Salon (NL) / Day Zero Film (ZA)
Logline: In the stillness of a South African village tucked between forest and mountain, the neat lawns and quiet streets hide a restless past. Guided by forgotten photographs, the filmmaker enters a world where ghosts speak, exorcisms echo, and a slow, fragile process of decolonisation unfolds beneath the surface.
Granted support: € 100.000,-
Thuthuka is an initiative of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and the Netherlands Film Fund to promote collaboration between South Africa and the Netherlands. A new deadline for Thuthuka will be published by the end of August.
