Three filmmakers selected for second round of TalentScope Documentary
During TalentScope Documentary, documentary filmmakers work together with a curator appointed by IDFA in a programme designed to deepen and enrich their artistic authorship. Following the first cohort, which consisted of Luuk Bouwman and Marina Meijer, three filmmakers have now been selected for the second round.
The programme is organised by IDFA and is structured around two research questions formulated by the director: one focused on deepening their artistic authorship and one aimed at developing a new documentary project. The TalentScope programme concludes with a curated programme or public presentation by the director at The Documentary Pavilion.
During the TalentScope Documentary programme, the filmmakers will be mentored by Gitte Hansen, IDFA’s new international Head of Studies for TalentScope Documentary. Gitte spent 20 years working as an executive producer and Head of Sales & Acquisition for First Hand Films, and has also worked as a mentor for many years for initiatives including IDFA Project Space and the international pitching event Below Zero.
Anne van Campenhout – Body of Knowledge
Filmmaker Anne van Campenhout is participating in TalentScope Documentary with the project Body of Knowledge. The film explores the donation of bodies to science, something that occurs more frequently in the Netherlands than anywhere else in the world.
‘The first time I saw a body donated to science, I knew I would never forget it. The sense of wonder at how complex and fragile our bodies are — that is the feeling I want to convey to the audience’, Anne says about Body of Knowledge. ‘This subject goes beyond science: it touches on imagination, ethics and philosophy. Within TalentScope, I want to explore how I can make those deeper layers tangible through cinema.’
Bibi Fadlalla – Dalal
Youth documentary Dalal is the project with which Bibi Fadlalla joins TalentScope Documentary. The documentary centres on 10-year-old Sudanese girl Dalal, who spends her summer holiday wandering the streets of Cairo, escaping the tensions within her family.
‘My project focuses on the Sudanese diaspora, a community whose stories are still underrepresented within the international film landscape’, Bibi explains. ‘For me, TalentScope is an opportunity to further develop my artistic voice and build new connections within the film world. Through this programme, I hope to find the right creative collaborations to make a story that stays close to the lived experiences of the characters while also resonating with a wider audience.’
Festus Toll – Stowaway Man
During TalentScope Documentary, Festus Toll will work on Stowaway Man. The documentary tells the story of a young Kenyan man who hides in the landing gear of an airplane in the hope of reaching the Netherlands.
