EFM Panel - Innovative Funding in Focus: from the Margins to the Center

Join our EFM Talk Innovative Funding in Focus: From the Margins to the Center on Monday February 14 14:00-15:00 PM.

The question of the role of film organisations in providing production funding for marginalized film creatives as well as in creating robust network for new voices in the film industry is far from new, yet has received renewed attention in the wake of the global uprisings against racial injustice of the summer of 2020.

Programme (moderated by Nadia Denton)

  • Welcome by German Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth
  • Fireside chat Nadia Denton & Bero Beyer (CEO Netherlands Filmfund)
  • Panel discussion between Bero Beyer, Shamira Raphäela (filmmaker Shabu/Generation official selection) and Jon-Sesrie Goff (program officer, Creativity and Free Expression - Ford Foundation)
  • Q&A with online audience

Featuring the insights of the Netherlands Film Fund as well as the experiences of a funding body with a substantial track record in this area of funding, this conversation will explore the key role that regional, national and international film funders can play in identifying equity gaps, marginalized creatives and their needs. Beyond the question of funding itself, this discussion will also beg the question of how film organisation can collaborate with interest groups, advocacy bodies, collectives and alliances who are already mobilizing and doing the grassroots work to provide greater access and resources to their networks of film creatives.

This exchange will, in particular, feature the case study of an inspirational and innovative Netherlands Film Funds-supported pilot initiative, Cypher Cinema, which adopts a completely out-of-the-box approach to funding in terms of its target-group, selection processes and procedures.
