Berlinale 2021: Dutch (Co)Productions
Two short (co)productions from the Netherlands are selected for the upcoming Berlinale: Lost on Arrival by the artist couple PolakVanBekkum, will screen in Forum Expanded and animated short film Easter Eggs, minority coproduced by Ka-Ching Cartoons, is part of Berlinale Shorts. The 71st Berlinale takes place in two stages: from 1-5 March the Berlinale Industry Event and 9-20 June a Summer Special for the audience.
Lost on Arrival is a short documentary directed and produced by visual artists and film makers Esther Polak and Ivar van Bekkum. The film world premiered at the International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam (Idfa) last November.
After retiring, a man wants to return to the Caribbean island where he once lived. Advancing dementia ruins his plans. He moves there but never really arrives.
PolakVanBekkum have been working together for many years, creating several international succesful films. Lost on Arrival works as a companion piece to the pair's The Ride. The Ride was shot on Google Earth and selected for Idfa 2019, it is described as a response to a relived, and tragic, experience. The film was also selected in competition at Nyon Visions du Reél.
Animated short film Easter Eggs, by Nicolas Keppens (BE), will celebrate its international premiere at Berlinale Shorts. The film is a co-production of Animal Tank (BE), Ka-Ching Cartoons (NL) and Miyu Productions (FR). International sales are handled by Miyu Distribution. The film world premiered at the Leuven Short Film Festival (BE) where it received the Audience Award. Furthermore Easter Eggs received a Special Jury Mention at the Angers Premiers Plans Festivall (FA).
In Easter Eggs two teenagers are looking for something extraordinary in an ordinary village. They try to catch an exotic bird that escaped from a Chinese restaurant.
Ka-Ching Cartoons, led by directors and producers duo Joost van den Bosch and Erik Verkerk, created several internationally successful animation productions. Last October, they won the Cinekid Festival Audience Award for animated short film Ink (2020). This film was also selected for the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. Other productions include animated short Tex (2017) and minority co-produced animated feature Cash for Trash (2019).
Both films are supported by The Netherlands Filmfund.
