Annecy 2020: Award Undone - The Hospital

The International Animation Film Festival has just announced its Official Annecy Festival Awards 2020, during an online awards ceremony.

The Hospital episode from director Hisko Hulsing's Amazon series Undone has won the Jury Award for a TV Series from the Annecy festival. The series is produced by The Tornante Company (US) and co-produced by Submarine (Netherlands). The series is written/showrun by Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg.

While recovering in hospital from her car accident, Alma talks with her dead father, who makes a confusing yet compelling request. The episode is shocking, dramatic, jarring and funny in equal measure as we are taken on a surreal journey through Alma's memories and subconscious.

As in previous Hulsing films, such as Junkyard (2012) and Montage of Heck (2015, for which he created the animated sequences), the rotoscope animation is set against a series of beautiful and expressive oil-painted backdrops.

Animated short Junkyard, by Hisko Hulsing and produced by il Luster Productions (NL), screened at more than 80 international film festivals. The film premiered at Annecy Animation Film Festival and won awards from several international film festivals, such as Ottawa International Animation Festival, Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival (SICAF), Holland Animation Film Festival and Shanghai TV Festival. Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, by Brett Morgen and produced by HBO/Universal Pictures, was selected for festivals such as Sundance Film Festival, the Berlinale and SXSW.

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival takes place online from 15-30 June.
