Quo Vadis, Aida? en Where is Anne Frank? nominated for European Film Awards 2021

Today the European Film Academy announced the nominations for the 34th European Film Awards.

Quo Vadis, Aida? is nominated in four categories, including Best Film and Best Director. Written and directed by Jasmila Žbanić, Quoa Vadis, Aida? centers around Aida, who is a translator for the UN in the small town of Srebrenica. When the Serbian army takes over the town, her family is among the thousands of citizens looking for shelter in the UN camp. The film was previously selected for the Official selection of the Venice Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam and is the Bosnia and Herzegovina submission for the Academy Awards. 

Ari Folman’s animated feature Where is Anne Frank? is nominated for Best European Animation film. In the film, Kitty, the imaginary friend of Anne, is desperate to prove that her best friend is still alive. Kitty is a child of today, she’s wild, smart, tough, nervy, unfettered; she flees the Anne Frank House, steals the diary and sets out on the most difficult journey of all: discovering Anne’s fate after she and her family were caught by the Gestapo. Where is Anne Frank was part of the official selection for the Cannes Film Festival 2021. 

Both films received support from the Netherlands Film Fund and the Netherlands Film Production Incentive. 

Babi Yar. Context by Sergei Loznitsa is nominated in the category Best Documentary. Babi Yar is the ravine at the edge of the Ukrainian capital Kiev where one of the largest mass executions in history took place. Sergei Loznitsa tells this documentary account in meticulous detail, building from the lead up to the aftermath of the two days in September 1941, when Nazis shot dead 33,771 Jews at this place. The mass execution forms the silent core of this film constructed entirely from archive footage, to which sound has been added in some cases. The film will premiere at IDFA 2021. 

The more than 4,100 members of the European Film Academy, will now vote for the winners.The winners will be announced at the European Film Awards ceremony happening in Berlin on 11 December. For more of the 2021 nominations, click here
